- University rower - back issues started then with herniation
- Highly competitive Ironman triathlete in mid to late 20's.
- Early 30's started to feel back issue inflame to point that couldn't walk anymore (not for lack of rehab effort! Maybe just the "wrong" type of rehab). Opted for surgery as the disc had fully blown and nerve was fully impinged.
- FAI discussion. I think part of my back issues relate to the interaction between the pelvis and lower back - and Hip impingement is partly a symptom - perhaps a combination of pelvis alignment and lower back weak due to many reasons (psoas had always been an issue). So have been trying to fix it from the hip side as well as strengthen the back at the same time. I've had pretty good success as the hip was definitely jammed - and I've identified range of motion and imbalances in hip strength that I had never considered. Thanks for considering!
Love the passion and enthusiasm you bring. I'm trying to get back to a position where I can train the way you suggest...I appreciate your position on back surgeries, etc - but reality is that I've had two microdiscectomies (I'm not overweight) and what I think is a minor form of FAI. So the question is - with the style of training you recommend...how do I get from my current state of undertrained - back to the ability to handle all of the movements your workouts prescribe? Right now it feels a bridge too far. Thanks very much!
Idk if I can ask 2 questions but also can u talk about if muscle asymmetry matters? I *feel* like it does but I also am reading you saying it “doesnt” - maybe there is something I’m not getting or I’m just wrong lol
I think my right shoulder and leg are stronger than my left despite lifting with both or at least I favor that side - I also have shoulder issues & hip/back issues on that side
I will answer my complete thoughts on “asymmetry issues” and some thoughts on what might be going on with you that you can try to look into further as well
All good my man we have time for plenty of questions I’d say
What exercises do you think are best for wrestling takedowns? Lifting or plyometrics? I know it might be context dependent so would you say that if I am fairly strong (can squat 370lbs high bar to parallel @ 189lbs bodyweight) what do you think I should focus on?
Will answer in depth in video. I’ll provide a better way to look at look at training questions like that (how *you* should look at training for wrestling) & also give you some practical exercise choices / setups that will be strong recommendations since I know that’s what you’re looking for.

I’ll go over several things to consider regarding info I think is valuable to be made aware of and help try to point you in the correct direction.
Thanks for the question Matt

Age, training history, and current status for training/ exercise routine?
why did you receive these surgeries?
How long ago and how long apart?
What rehab have you attempted?
FAI (you refer to the hip impingement correct?) - what makes you consider that as the issue?
Answer those and maybe some more context and I’ll give large scale discussion to help you on video

Have wrist pains when supinating, specifically on left side of the left wrist
Believe its from cleans as well as holding heavy weighted dumbbels/kbs
Any exercises to help mitigate/strengthen the wrists? Thanks
Will go over general wrist care & directions to look toward while finding and resolving problems especially related to the hands/wrists
Some Universal exercises + some tests to try
Thanks for the question

A favorite question of mine.
